What is all the fuss about SALSA & BRC Accreditation?

BRC and SALSA Food Standards Secures and Maintains Customers…

So what is all the fuss about food safety accreditation?

Think it could be for you but not sure? Well we decided it was about time someone summarized some of the accreditation that is out there, how it could help and who it’s designed for. Nobody wants to dive into something without knowing all the facts first!

The main question; why accreditation?

As a food producer one of the best ways to meet your legal obligations and safeguard your brand is to prepare for and pass a food safety standard, thus giving you a standard that goes above and beyond the basic legal requirements. By working at these standards your ensuring that your product is produced in the best possible way and in a safe environment. If your product is good, then your reputation is good and your brand enhanced. So why then go for a standard? That parts simple; customers want reassurance. If your certified by a trusted organisation then they will have more trust in you, therefore leading to more loyal customers.

So which accreditation?

SALSA is the UK’s Food Safety Certification Scheme, aimed at small and micro-sized Food & Drink businesses wishing to gain approval to supply to UK buyers. find out more

How can we help you?

Food Safety is a complex process and most food business’ don’t go it alone! A lot of companies will employ a food safety consultant to assist them in meeting the standard requirements, keeping the system up to date and/or providing ongoing support with the food safety system. A good food safety consultant/ mentor should guide you in which standard is best for your business and your goals, provide a detailed and clear report on where your current food safety system is compared to the standard you choose and provide the guidance you desire to create a food safety system that is your own. Do not accept an off the shelf quality manual from your mentor because that is where it will stay…

So what can I do?

Working with your food safety consultant should speed up the whole audit preparation stage, but to help in the preparation of passing first time it is helpful if the whole business culture embraces the process and keeps focus on the rewards that can be gained once you have that certified logo stamp. Equally important is the on-going assistance as maintaining and changing the food safety system is vital as the business grows and changes, but you need to keep your consultant informed as you change and grow.
